This is an interesting thought, that the internet will someday support a new Universal religion...however Peter's article however daunting to think about seems to be a fairly realistic observation. Perhaps a less daunting take would be that religions' web presences inform and perhaps persuade their followers and potential followers.
The internet does support radical extremists by making their words and presence known, an immediate example is the shocking Westboro Baptist church which I hate to reference but is a good example of how extremists are gathering to make their oft offensive beliefs heard. http://www.godhatesfags.com/ For the less extreme religious groups, their web presence seems to more inform and subtly persuade than accumulate in intimidating "military" like forces. For example, many churches have messages from their pastors about their church. http://www.ebenezerbaptistchurch.com/about.asp
As a young adult who was raised devout Catholic I do feel as a college educated person I have withdrawn from my childhood weekly Sunday church goings and strict beliefs. However I feel connected often spiritually from the people I connect with on the internet by freely sharing ideas, art and music and this brings me happiness although I still consider myself Christian. Isn't that was most religions are about anyways?
